Thermo-Mechanical Modelling of High-Flux X-ray Slit Systems under Extreme Thermal Loads

This master’s thesis project focuses on the thermo-mechanical behaviour of high-flux and high-energy X-ray slit systems. These systems operate under extreme conditions, where localised X-ray heat loads can cause slit blade temperatures above 1000°C while the components are mechanically constrained by pre-tensioned bolts.
The task is to develop finite element models to predict temperature distributions, thermal stresses, deformation, and potential failure risks in the slit blades. The study will investigate the influence of X-ray power density, beam spot size, maximum tolerable thermal load, and material- and energy-dependent X-ray penetration depth, including volumetric energy deposition within the blades.
The expected outcome is a simulation-based understanding of the operational limits of X-ray slit systems, leading to practical design guidelines and predictive modelling approaches that support design validation.
